David (teacher from Brooklyn International High School):

I enjoyed participating in the StoryCorps activity with my students and the other students participating in the World Science Festival. My favorite part was waiting outside the StoryCorps trailer, and talking to the students and Soraya and Paul (the producer and photographer from the Festival) about different topics. As a teacher, it is important for me to spend time with students in an informal setting. It provides me the chance to connect with students in a different way. I get to experience them more fully as human beings with colorful lives, rather than simply as people I am trying to educate and improve. The interview was great because Diana Cheung was fun and engaging in the interview. I feel I gained perspective on my own life by recounting my stories, and by hearing about Diana’s life.

The other Pioneers students and I went to the Lincoln Center StoryCorps mobile booth to record interviews. There we met Jesse, Diana and Shreya. At first I was nervous to interview Jesse. But, when we started the interview, I felt comfortable talking to him and there were so many things to talk about. But we didn't have enough time! After we were done with our interview, we hung out while the other pairs did their interviews. Our teacher David was there, with us all the time. I was amazed to see that teachers have a life outside school and they can also be fun, instead of just being a source of homework. I had a great day meeting all the other students.
