Pioneers Students’ Final Prep
Diana:
We've spent quite a lot of time preparing by doing mock interviews, reviewing literature about our scientists, and working in the labs. I hope that we'll be able to convey all that we learned about Dr. Varmus to the audience on Thursday. Every time I think about the Pioneers and how awesome it's going to be, my heart starts rattling like a jackhammer. My motto last year was "pressure is a privilege" but this year, it's “pressure makes diamonds!”
My favorite part of this experience is really, the whole entire process. I've met some really incredible people from different high schools and I'm so impressed by all that they've done. Each and everyone of them is making their own little revolutions in science. I've learned that Dr. Varmus is seriously the epitome of the “cool scientist”—not only is he a pioneer in the field of cancer research but he's also a serious bicyclist and film reviewer.
If any student is presented with the opportunity to attend a public panel like the Pioneers event or to participate, I hope that they'll jump at it! How many high school students can say that “I spent a day with Dr. Harold Varmus talking about everything?” The World Science Festival is changing how science is communicated. Be a part of the movement! Participate!

At last, the interview is only days away. I have a kind of weird feeling about the final day. I don’t think I am nervous about it. I think it’s just excitement and something else. It’s a lot of fun to meet different people and interview them and get to know them, but I just it to be the big day now. My favorite part of preparing for this event was when we went to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Harlem DNA lab to experiment with bacteria and jelly fish genes. It is a great experience being a part of the World Science Festival and meeting different people. I will encourage every student to do what I am doing, because it’s a experience that will help you through your whole life.

I amm soooo nervous right now, but I definitely don't regret this experience. The coolest part HAS to be the scuba diving. It was so much fun and it tested me to my limits. I recommend this to anyone who is a science nerd!
