Dany Spencer Adams

Developmental Biologist, Author

Dany Spencer Adams explores how ions moving among cells act as signals during regeneration, development, and cancer. She has uncovered evidence that bioelectric signals can trigger and regulate diverse complex processes that include gene expression changes. Critically, bioelectricity can be controlled by many existing drugs, can prevent or reverse abnormal growth including cancer or genetic birth defects, and can trigger regeneration of vertebrate appendages. Dr. Adams is a Research Professor in the Department of Biology at Tufts University, a Principle Investigator in the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology, faculty in the EBICS program at MIT, and a member of The Allen Discovery Center at Tufts. She is the author of Lab Math: A Handbook of Measurements, Calculations, and Other Quantitative Skills for Use at the Bench and coauthor of Ahead of the Curve: Hidden Breakthroughs in the Biosciences. Her movies of bioelectricity have been seen on Discovery’s Curiosity.
