Job Cohen is the popular former mayor of Amsterdam and leader of the Dutch Labour Party. He studied law at the University of Groningen and joined the University of Maastricht in 1981 where he became full professor and Rector. In 1983 he became the secretary of state for Education in the third Lubbers government. After a second term as Rector in Maastricht, he again became secretary of state in 1998, now of the Justice department. In 2001 he became mayor of Amsterdam, a position he left to become the leader of the Labour Party in 2010; he resigned in 2012.
