The Brain and Bourne: Neuroscience in the Bourne Trilogy

In this special collaboration with MoMA, a screening of The Bourne Identity will be followed by a panel discussion in which the film’s producer/director Doug Liman will be joined by psychiatrist and neuroscientist Giulio Tononi to explore the science behind The Bourne Trilogy. Film scholar and producer/screenwriter James Schamus (Co-President of Focus Features) will moderate a discussion about brain function, memory, personality, and identity as seen through the lens of the remarkable character, Jason Bourne.

The program is presented to coincide with a series of screenings of The Bourne Trilogy - recently acquired by MoMA’s Film Department for its permanent collection.

Screening begins at 5:00 pm
Discussion begins at 7:30 pm

Tickets for this program are available for $10 beginning May 23 at the MOMA box office.  Tickets become free to the public beginning 4pm on May 30.

  • Doug Liman

    Doug Liman is an American film director and producer, whose credits include The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007).

  • James Schamus

    James Schamus is an award-winning screenwriter and producer. He is the CEO of Focus Features, whose films have included Brokeback Mountain, Lost in Translation, and Atonement. Schamus is an associate professor of film at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

  • Giulio Tononi

    Psychiatrist and neuroscientist Giulio Tononi is a world authority on the neurology of sleep and has spent much of his scientific career exploring the biological basis for consciousness. A professor of psychiatry and the Distinguished Chair in Consciousness Science at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, Tononi explores connections between consciousness and personality through the lens of art and philosophy.

This event is presented in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art.
