Dean Falk

Anthropologist

Dean Falk divides her time between Florida and New Mexico. She is the Hale G. Smith Professor of Anthropology and a Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee, and she serves as a senior scholar at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe. Falk is interested in the evolution of the brain and cognition. She’s done collaborative research on the brains (or traces of them imprinted in fossilized skulls) of nonhuman primates, prehistoric human relatives, and recent humans, including Homo floresiensis (“hobbit”) and Albert Einstein. Dean Falk is the author of several books, including Braindance: Revised and Expanded Edition, Finding Our Tongues: Mothers, Infants, and the Origins of Language, and The Fossil Chronicles: How Two Controversial Discoveries Changed Our View of Human Evolution.
