Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis

Cognitive Scientist, Musicologist

Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis studies music from the perspective of cognitive science. She is interested in how people without formal training come to make sense of music and be moved by it. Her book On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind received the Wallace Berry Award and the Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Her latest book The Psychology of Music: A Very Short Introduction was published in 2019. Her cross-cultural research on narrative perceptions of music is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. She is a past Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge. She is a professor of music and Director of the Music Cognition Lab at Princeton University, as well as the President of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition. She was previously a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Music Cognition Lab at the University.
