Whitney Coyle

Acoustician

A trained musician-mathematician, Whitney L. Coyle found her calling in Acoustics, the science of sound. Coyle studied clarinet performance and mathematics at Murray State University in Kentucky and is a recent Acoustics Ph.D. from the Penn State Graduate Program in Acoustics. Her NSF sponsored dissertation research was performed primarily in Marseille and Paris, France and focused on the acoustical characteristics of the clarinet. She is currently focused on research to better the understanding of the complicated mechanisms that contribute to the playability (or lack thereof) of a particular instrument. Currently an Assistant Professor of Physics at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, she is passionate about education and teaching through research with undergraduate students. Dr. Coyle is active in many scientific societies including the Acoustical Society of America, the Association of Physics Teachers, and the Society of Women Engineers.
