John Schaefer is the host and producer of WNYC’s long-running new music show New Sounds, which Billboard magazine has called “the #1 radio show for the Global Village,” founded in 1982, and its innovative Soundcheck podcast, which features live performances and interviews with a variety of guests. He also hosts The Furthermore on WNYC’s classical sister station, WQXR. He created the New Sounds Live concert series in 1986, which features new works, commissioned pieces, and a special series devoted to live music for silent films. Schaefer has curated the BAM World Music Festival, chaired the Pulitzer Prize jury for Music, and hosted lectures and panels for Lincoln Center, BAM, the World Science Festival, the World Public Forum in Rhodes, Greece, and Tanglewood’s Contemporary Music Festival, among others.
