Jonathan Haidt

Psychologist

Jonathan Haidt is the Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business, serving in the Business & Society Program. His academic research focuses on the intuitive foundations of morality, how moral emotions vary across cultures, and how these insights can inform institutional design and ethics. He is the author of several best-selling books, including The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness (2024), in which he examines how the confluence of smartphones, social media, and changes in parenting have altered the landscape of youth mental health—and calls for policy and cultural shifts to reverse these trends. In 2018, together with Greg Lukianoff, he published The Coddling of the American Mind, critiquing campus culture and “safetyism,” arguing that well-intended protective practices can undermine resilience in young people. His 2012 book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion argues that moral reasoning often follows intuitive judgments, and that differing moral priorities underlie political and cultural divides.
