About the Opportunity:
The Senior IT Academic Technology Specialist will provide leadership and strong operational oversight to ensure efficient design, implementation and ongoing support for the technology needs of WSU, the educational arm of World Science Festival. This includes monitoring and updating the WSU website and overseeing the implementation and ongoing use of the LMS for online courses.
Reporting to the President of World Science U (WSU) and Executive Director of Education, or in their absence, the Director of Education, the IT Specialist will support the day-to-day operations of WSU’s technology needs including those for the World Science Scholars (WSS) program and related initiatives. They will also provide support and, when appropriate create software solutions for course creation and implementation.
The Senior IT Academic Technology Specialist will be effective in liaising with students and other members of the public, as well as internally with the educational, media, and production teams.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include:
- Administer and maintain WSU’s LMS, including creating and managing user accounts, configuring courses, and generating reports.
- Communicate with LMS and website vendors to authorize repairs/updates for hardware/software issues.
- Create and/or facilitate training and tutorials to support faculty use of the LMS.
- Design and develop digital components of online courses and other learning materials that are aligned with WSU’s brand and standards.
- Provide day-to-day support for users of LMS and WSU website.
- Independently perform routine troubleshooting and repair.
- Iterate and improve on design in a cycle of continuous improvement.
- Provide instruction and assistance to new IT specialists as they join WSU, thus maximizing efficiency and usage of the LMS.
- Track problem reports, troubleshoot reported issues, and document resolutions.
- Collaborate with other arms of WSF as they may relate to education.
- Due to the nature of the position, work outside normal hours of operation may be required.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
The Successful Candidate:
The Senior IT Academic Technology Specialist must possess a proven ability to develop, manage and bring projects to completion as well as the ability to identify problems and independently design and implement solutions. The successful candidate will bring a high level of creativity, energy, flexibility, and the desire to work collaboratively with a highly-committed, fast-paced, entrepreneurial team. They will be expected to have at least 4 years of experience with the proven ability to creatively develop solutions to technical challenges. Specifically, the following skills are required:
- Bachelor’s degree and at least four-years of experience working with educational technology;
- Proven track record of managing and updating websites and educational learning platforms;
- Ability to work with diverse constituencies, partner organizations, and vendors, both locally, and nationally;
- Experience working creatively with a motivated team;
- Knowledge of the latest and emerging technologies related to online learning and related software;
- Familiarity with the broader aspects of online education and non-profit landscape, both in New York City and nationally and the related technology needs;
- Ability to train new users of LMS as well as training in management of LMS and website;
- Have an understanding of compliance requirements for online education both nationally and internationally;
- Exceptional verbal, written, and organizational skills.
