The World Science Festival (WSF) is seeking a World Science Scholars Intern to help coordinate and run the World Science Scholars Festival in New York City and to read applications to help select the next cohort of scholars for the World Science Scholars program.
The World Science Scholars program selects a small group of high school students from around the world with extraordinary mathematical talent and provides them with an unparalleled opportunity to apply their abilities to unexplored scientific disciplines. Guided by world-renowned experts, scholars examine ways that advanced mathematics skills can be applied to solve complex challenges in a wide range of scientific fields. The program culminates in a five day long in-person Festival in New York City, featuring distinguished speakers and other science and cultural events. The World Science Scholars Intern will be responsible for ensuring a welcoming and professional experience for scholars, their families, and the world-renowned scientists participating in the events, as well as helping to select highly qualified scholars for admission to the 2024-2025 cohort.
This position begins May 6, 2024 and ends June 7, 2024. It is a hybrid remote/in-person position but will be fully in-person and require working long hours the week of the Festival, including the weekend. Compensation is $4,500.
Responsibilities Include:
Applications
- Reading applications for the 2024-2025 cohort of World Science Scholars
- Evaluating application materials per WSF’s standards and guidelines
- Calibrating evaluation criteria and discussing final cohort selections with WSF staff
Festival
- Helping with planning and coordination in weeks leading up to Festival
- Interacting with and answering questions from scholars and their families
- Helping with scholar and family transportation between events
- Setting up and breaking down events, including transporting materials to/from venues
- Greeting event speakers
- Other responsibilities as needed
The Successful Candidate Will Have:
- Obtained or be currently pursuing a degree in a STEM field
- Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with culturally diverse groups
- Highly responsive and adaptable in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Strong planning and organization skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Attentiveness to both details and the big picture
- Familiarity with highly selective international math and science programs and competitions for high school students is desired (e.g. Rise, Regeneron ISEF, International Mathematical Olympiad)
- Experience reading and evaluating applications, conducting interviews, and working/volunteering in an admissions office is desired
