Allyson Sheffield

Astronomer
Allyson Sheffield is an observational astronomer whose research focuses on the formation and structure of the Milky Way galaxy. She studies the motion and chemistry of old stars, from which we can infer the evolutionary history of the Milky Way. She regularly travels to observatories in Arizona and Chile to collect spectroscopic data of old giant stars. Recently, Dr. Sheffield has expanded her research to include pulsating variable stars, enabling a more detailed understanding of the three-dimensional structure of the Milky Way. She is an associate professor of Physics in the Natural Sciences Department at LaGuardia Community College, where she teaches Physics, Astronomy, and Astrobiology courses. Prior to joining the faculty at LaGuardia, Dr. Sheffield served as a Science Fellow at Columbia University.
