Huda Y. Zoghbi

NEUROSCIENTIST

Huda Y. Zoghbi is a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Molecular and Human Genetics, Neurology and Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine. She is also an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Zogbhi is a 2022 Kavli laureate in Neuroscience. Along with her fellow laureate Harry Orr, Dr. Zogbhi identified the gene mutation responsible for causing spinocerebellar ataxia type1. She also discovered the mutations in the gene MECP2 that cause Rett syndrome, a devastating motor and cognitive condition which develops in young girls. As a result of her efforts, diagnostic tools have been developed and innovative treatments are under study to improve the lives of those affected by these diseases.
