Jessica Joyner

Microbial Ecologist

Jessica Joyner works at CUNY Brooklyn College exploring the microbiome of our daily, urban environment. Dr. Joyner’s research is centered on the microscopic life in the coastal waters and looking for specific bacteria that indicate pollution. Dr. Joyner’s students plan an active role in this research and bring a great energy and perspective to the work. Her passion is for the environment and how we can live responsibly within it, and she enjoys teaching and telling others about science and the work that she does to protect the environment. Since moving to New York, Dr. Joyner has enjoyed learning more about different cultures, especially through cooking, as well as new winter sports as an escape from the busy city. Overall, asking questions and learning new things is what excites her. Dr. Joyner grew up in South Florida and received her Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Georgia.
