Jocelyn Read

Astrophysicist

Jocelyn Read is an assistant professor in the Gravitational Wave Physics and Astronomy Center of California State University, Fullerton. She has spent more than a decade studying neutron star astrophysics and gravitational waves. Read and her research group investigate what gravitational waves, like LIGO and Virgo’s first observation of merging neutron stars in 2017, reveal about matter inside these incredibly dense objects.

Over her career, she has developed a widely-used model for dense matter inside neutron stars, generated the first simulation-based estimates of how well LIGO could measure properties of that matter, proposed a novel way to generate precursor flares before short gamma ray bursts, and revealed the cosmological potential of gravitational waves alone encoding both distance and redshift.

Read is the senior lead of the Extreme Matter group within the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and the editor-in-chief of LIGO Magazine.
