Michael Salling

Neurobiologist

Michael Salling, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He received his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Psychology from Tulane University and his doctorate in Neurobiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on identifying the acute and long-term effects of alcohol on the brain throughout the lifespan in an effort to understand how alcohol influences memory, decision-making and affective behavior. The goal of his work is to identify specific neuro-adaptations that occur following excessive alcohol consumption which contribute to the motivational and neurocognitive symptoms associated with alcohol use disorders. This research is supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the Smithers Foundation.
