Shannon Vallor

AI Ethicist

Shannon Vallor is the Regis and Dianne McKenna Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Santa Clara University. She is also a Visiting Researcher and AI Ethicist at Google, and a former President of the Society for Philosophy and Technology. With the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, she has developed many free online resources for university and industry education in tech ethics. Her academic research focuses on the impact of emerging technologies on the moral and intellectual habits, skills and virtues of human beings – the transformation of human character by rapid advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and surveillance. Her work appears in numerous journals as well as the book Technology and the Virtues: A Philosophical Guide to a Future Worth Wanting from Oxford University Press. In 2015, she was awarded the World Technology Award in Ethics.
