Shep Doeleman

Physicist, Harvard
Breakthrough Prize

Shep Doeleman is an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and the Founding Director of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. He led the international team that three years ago produced the first direct image of a black hole, called M87; and recently the EHT unveiled yet another startling image: a black hole at the heart of our own galaxy called Sagittarius A Star. Doeleman now leads the next-generation EHT (ngEHT) project, which aims to make movies of black holes to test Einstein’s gravity with even greater precision.
