Rodney Brooks

Roboticist

Recently retired from his position as Panasonic Professor of Robotics at MIT, Rodney Brooks’ latest startup, Heartland Robotics, aims to revitalize American manufacturing by providing workers with new robotic tools. During his employment at MIT, Brooks served as director of the institution’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and its Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory—MIT’s largest lab, boasting over 800 people at the time of his retirement. Brooks is also the co-founder and a current board member of iRobot, which has delivered over 6 million robots to American homes, and thousands of robots to help U.S. forces battle roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Earlier in his career, Brooks served on the faculty at Stanford and held post-doctoral positions at both Carnegie Mellon University and MIT.
