Marcelo Gleiser

Marcelo Gleiser is a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author, and the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College. His research spans early-universe cosmology, quantum fields, phase transitions, astrobiology, information theory, and the emergence of complexity in physical systems.
Over a scientific career spanning more than three decades, Gleiser has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers. In 1994, he co-discovered oscillons, long-lived localized field configurations that have since become an active area of research in theoretical physics. His more recent work explores configurational entropy and the use of information theory to understand the stability and complexity of physical systems across scales. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and received the Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from the White House and the National Science Foundation.
In 2019, Gleiser became the first Latin American recipient of the Templeton Prize, joining a distinguished group of laureates that includes scientists such as Freeman Dyson, Martin Rees, George Ellis, and Nobel laureate Charles Townes.
Gleiser is also an internationally recognized author and public intellectual whose work bridges physics, cosmology, philosophy, and fundamental questions about the origins of the universe and life. His books have been translated into numerous languages, and he is a three-time recipient of Brazil’s prestigious Jabuti Award. He founded Dartmouth’s Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Engagement, dedicated to advancing dialogue between the sciences and the humanities.
